Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading
UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and
non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the
benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Context:

Background Information

As a signatory to the Grand Bargain commitments and recognizing the flexibility, efficiency and
effectiveness of using cash-based interventions (CBI), IOM commits to institutionalizing and
increasing the use of CBI as a modality of assistance across its activities. IOM views CBI as a
modality for project delivery where cash transfers and/or vouchers are provided to individuals,
households or group/community recipients to directly purchase and access goods or services.
IOM today has a varied CBI portfolio, reaching close to 3,9 million people in 112 countries.

The position is placed in the CBI Unit within the Department of Humanitarian Response and
Recovery, the selected candidate will be based in Headquarters, Geneva, Switzerland. The CBI
Unit leads IOM’s effort to increase, coordinate and standardize the use of CBI as a modality to
deliver assistance across the organization and implement the IOM CBI Strategy 2022-2026.

Supervision

The Intern - Cash-Based Interventions (CBI) Support will work under the overall supervision of
the Senior CBI Officer and the direct supervision of the CBI Officer.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

1. Collect, organize and store practical tools, templates and guidance documents developed by
the CBI Unit and IOM Country Offices and keep the online repository and relevant websites
updated.

2. Support the revision of tools and guidance documents and contribute to the creation of new
harmonized tools and templates to be used by all missions implementing CBI, including with a
focus on protection mainstreaming and other cross-cutting issues.

3. Attend CBI-related meetings and forums; prepare talking points, briefings and meeting
minutes when required.

4. Support in planning, coordinating and documenting events, such as meetings, and contribute
to capacity-building efforts, including webinars, workshops and trainings.


5. Support in revising project proposals prior to endorsement when required.

6. Compile information from IOM Country Offices on CBI and support in developing content and
graphical design for reports, articles, guidance documents and presentations related to CBI in
IOM.

7. Conduct evidence-based research and literature reviews on new and innovative technologies
with potential to improve the delivery of CBI and the use of CBI in preparedness, emergency,
transition and recovery operations.

8. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Training Components and Learning Elements

  • Strengthen professional skills to enhance office conduct by writing concise and clear
communications, participating in productive meetings with colleagues and other stakeholders
(e.g. drafting action points, following up, navigating challenges), and demonstrating commitment
to team objectives.
  • Identify opportunities to contribute with comparative advantage to strengthen the overall
operations of the CBI Unit by exploring with colleagues about ways to assist, applying personal
skills against needs and shortcomings in the team, and learning new skills that are needed.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

  • Master’s degree in Humanitarian Affairs, Development Studies, Political Science, International
Relations or a related field from an accredited academic institution or another field of studies
with the equivalent combination of humanitarian work experience.

Experience

  • Strong and demonstrable interest in humanitarian work;
  • Experience working with data analysis and reporting tools such as PowerBI and Microsoft
Excel;
  • Experience working with graphic and web design software is an advantage; and
  • Experience in research projects is an advantage.

Skills

  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Computer literacy in standard Microsoft Office tools;
  • Ability to timely understand the Organization’s structure and portfolios;
  • Proven ability to produce quality work accurately and concisely according to set deadlines;
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and
professional backgrounds; and
  • Working knowledge of graphic and web design software is an advantage.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish. All staff members are required to be
fluent in one of the three languages.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of another
official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process,


which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Eligibility and Selection

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM
programmes and activities;
b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for
whom internship is required to complete their studies; or
c) are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in
specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
d) are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme
(minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.
e) are at least 20 years old.

  • Depending on experience and location, IOM provides a small monthly stipend to help offset
costs.
