The Construction Laboratory Technician is responsible for conducting a wide range of standardized tests on construction materials, including soil, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt. This role ensures the quality, integrity, and safety of materials used in construction projects. The technician receives, prepares, and tests material samples, records data accurately, and reports results to senior staff, contributing to overall quality control and assurance.
Key Responsibilities:
·Sample Handling and Preparation:
o Receive, label, and safely store material samples from construction sites.
o Prepare test specimens according to standardized procedures (e.g., making concrete cubes, soil compaction, aggregate sieves).
o Ensure proper conditioning of samples, such as moisture content and curing.
·Testing and Analysis:
o Perform routine and specialized tests on materials, including but not limited to:
§Concrete:Compressive strength, slump, air content, temperature, and unit weight tests.
§Soil:Gradation, proctor, moisture content, and density tests.
§Asphalt:Marshal stability, specific gravity, and extraction tests.
§Aggregates:Sieve analysis and particle shape tests.
o Utilize a variety of lab equipment and instruments to perform tests accurately and efficiently.
o Adhere strictly to industry standards and testing methods (e.e., ASTM, BS, or other local standards).
·Equipment Maintenance and Safety:
o Clean, maintain, and calibrate testing apparatus and lab equipment regularly.
o Keep detailed records of equipment maintenance and calibration.
o Follow all safety protocols and procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and the safe handling of hazardous materials.
o Contribute to a clean and organized work environment.
·Collaboration and Communication:
o Communicate effectively with site engineers, project managers, and senior technicians regarding test results and material issues.
o Answer technical queries about test data and procedures.
o Assist in troubleshooting testing anomalies and developing solutions.
Qualifications and Skills:
·Education:High school diploma or equivalent is often required. An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a related field is often preferred.
·Experience:Previous experience in a construction material testing laboratory or field setting is highly desirable.
